As you may or may not know, Reelfoot Lake was formed by an earthquake that caused the Mississippi river to flow backwards filling the low land below with water, thus forming Reelfoot Lake. The lake is absolutely filled with stumps from the giant cypress and oaks that grew in the land that was overtaken. For many years these canoe shaped boats called "lake boats" were the only recommended way to traverse the waters, because of the shallow bottoms. There are a few of these still around. They are normally used by highly skilled and experienced fishermen and fisherwomen on Reelfoot. We have one in our marina that is still used, but by private owner.
